You have to enable the "Recycle Bin" on your computer instead of having deleted files actually getting deleted as the default action.

10:00 pm - Widescreen!
Holy cow. This is the first time I have done video editing since I got my Dell 2007WFP 20" Widescreen Display.

And WOW, this is the first time I truly appreciated the benefits of a nice big widescreen display. There's no going back anymore!

12:05 am - UltraPortable Notebook Computers
I finding it amusing that as soon as the last MacWorld Keynote passed with the announcement of the Macbook Air, both Dell and Fujitsu started filling my inbox with adverts about their ultraportable offerings. (I'm on their mailing lists.) Apple sets the tone as usual.

Though I think the real benchmark in the industry is still the Asus Eee PC. The standard model is only $399 and it is plenty of computer for most people who need an ultraportable solution for light use and network access. This sort of appliance is what will drive the low end of the market. And it's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for.

I see this as a very bright and promising time in the ultraportable ultracompact PC market because so many other manufacturers are targetting the Eee PC and will need to embrace Linux to keep the price down. Competition will rise the solid state dynasty will truly begin. My dad was predicting this type of thing thirty years ago.

And I am practically salivating at the possibilities of ultra compact low cost low-end PCs that are exactly what I'm looking for.

Beautiful.

Finally that 19" Sony CRT display is not cluttering up by bedroom. I've been trying to unload it for months. And I'm $50 richer. Excellent.

10:39 pm - Video Problems Solved!
I finally figured out why the VGA port on my video card was so flaky...

Today I flipped my PC's case on its front to lubricate some fans. A little blue plastic rectangle fell out of the case on the floor. It was the exact same shade of blue as the VGA port. I looked at the port and there was a space on the back of the same size. Turns out this little rectangle is actually some sort of retainer that attaches to the back of the VGA port. I slipped it back into place and suddenly I had no more connection problems with the port. Hooray!

11:39 pm - Intel Price Drops
The Q6600 is now down to CDN$290. I am going to drown in my own drool.

Now I must play the waiting game to ensure that all the old steppings are out of the supply chain so I can get a new G0 unit.

03:46 pm - Canon PowerShot SD700 IS
My New Camera:

Really Shiny Camera!
Specifications

Got it on sale for $350 at Future Shop. Normal price: $470.

It's technically last year's model but I'll accept that due to the bargain. The main advantage here is the Image Stabilization feature as it should help a lot for non-flash situations. It should definitely come in handy when I go to Europe this May.

Future Shop wanted to charge me $140 for a 2GB SD memory card, but I got the same one at CostCo for $54.

My old camera (PowerShot S400) is going to my sister. In all honestly, the old one feels a little more solid than the new one and has a better finish.

05:55 pm - Computer Cleanup...
- Take the sides off my machine, take it out on the balcony and give it a good power-dusting with the compressed air.
- Find that missing screw that was behind the computer.
- Power-dust the area where the computer was situated.
- Take out the old failing DVD-ROM and disused Plextor CD-Rw drive that were sitting in the bays, taking up power and making the machine heavier.
- Remove old cabling no longer used.

It is the end of an era. That Plextor drive has been in my computer for 5 years now. I bought it for some large sum of cash in downtown Toronto. Made in Japan with invincible reliability and burn quality. May it retire in peace and grace.

10:15 pm - Installing OSs From The Hip
I got pissed at how my computer was running, so on a whim I repartitioned the drive and updated to XP and let it install while I was cooking dinner.

(Prior to that I was running Windows 2000.)

The only real 'incident' was that the SATA controller driver and pretty much every other driver was on one of my SATA drives, so I had to download it again on my notebook to get things going.

One of the cool things about working with other tech geeks my own age is that you can have meaningful, in-depth conversations about Star Trek at work, and people appreciate the copy of the Ninja Turtles theme song on your mp3 share.

06:21 pm - Notebook Deal
I have the opportunity to purchase a brand new top-end IBM (Lenovo) T60 notebook for $900 off the list price in a completely legal and legitimate way.

Damn it. The fact is that I don't really "need" a notebook right now. And I want to save my money for a vacation this year.
