12:07 am - Tire Air Pressure
Supporters of the Obama campaign should mkae the Tire Pressure Gage the official symbol of their campaign. It would be brilliant. Show them off and raise them up in the air like people wave their cell phones (or formerly lighters) at concerts.

I've had my own gauge for years now, but with my new car the tires just never seem to lose air (except when I drove over a nail >.< ) and are always good when I test them.

09:50 pm - US Election Coverage
I've been following the Democratic and Republican nomination process for some weeks now, and one thing puzzles me: If you look at each state's results, it is almost always the Democrats that have more female than male voters, and the Republicans who have more male than female voters. Weird.

08:23 pm - Klu Klux Klan Membership Resurgence
As reported by CNN.

• Ku Klux Klan rebounding by exploiting hot-button issues, report says
• Klan uses, stirs up anti-immigrant sentiments, says Anti-Defamation League
• Hate group watchdog says Klan chapters grew 63% between 2000 and 2005
• ADL says Klan cooperating with other extremist groups more than before

In some ways, I'm amused because the KKK bases its membership exclusively on people who descended from immigrants that stole North America from the Natives.

Though this brings to light some of the most positive aspects of Canada's less free laws regarding Free Speech; Groups like the KKK can legally be suppressed.

10:07 pm - US Midterm Elections
So now Bush is saying that he believes the parties should work through their differences.

>_>

Riiiiight.

It should go without saying that I think the outcome was good. The less power Bush can indiscriminately wield, the better. I think he is more of a threat to the security of the Western World than Kim Jong Il of North Korea. But I shouldn't be caught thinking the Democrats are free of corruption or immune to the fact that power corrupts.

06:25 pm - Cue The Mel Brooks Jokes...
Canada presently has around 2300 troops in Afghanistan fighting against various insurgents, Al Qaeda, Taliban, etc.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of 10-feet (three metre) high marijuana plants.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defence staff, said on Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices ... and as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa.

"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those (forests) did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.

One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

09:25 pm - Interesting US Political / Media Analysis, and Terrorism Comments
Asia Times has an interesting commentary about the current US Political situation (Iraq War) and in particular, some interesting comments about the changes in how the media is covering it.

What continues to amaze me is the incredible success of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The crooks spent a few thousand dollars probably on equipment, training, plane tickets, etc and they brought about a $200,000,000,000 response that drained the US economy, ignited jihadist sentiment around the world, and turned Iraq into a top-notch jihadist training ground. It brought over 100,000 US soldiers into the line of fire with jihadists, and united anti-US sentiment around the world. It caused 2000+ US soldiers to be killed and thousands more to be injured, maimed, etc.

It caused the federal administration to set aside the Bill of Rights and lock up and torture suspected terrorists for indefinite periods with no legal or constitutional rights. What happened to being 'better' than the enemy, again? Are there 'exceptions' to freedom and principles or something? Which side again is out to destroy the American way of life?

It brought about an incredible amount of Big Brother surveillance. And what about security against unreasonable search and seizure? Ha ha... And it's the terrorists who are out to destroy the American way of life? Yes, liberty dies to the sound of thunderous applause. The US population is becoming highly demoralised and tired of this "war" and anti-terrorist activity is increasingly looked upon with suspicion.

I think it was one of the most sucessful terrorist attacks ever, and mainly because Bush & Co. fell hook line and sinker and took the bait, possibily falling over themselves so Cheney's friends could control more Middle-Eastern oil while Bush could go on a vendetta against the guy who tried to kill his father. Yes, those were some very smart crooks, I must say.

It's about time my country finally stood up to the US on the softwood lumber dispute. The US gov't has selective about which NAFTA rulings it follows for too long.

07:28 pm - Apple to return "iPod Tax"
I had to pay an extra $25 for my iPod thanks to Canadian music industry levies. Basically they assume that purchasers of iPod (and CD-Rs, cassette tapes, and other music players among other things) are music pirates, so they charge you a levy upfront which supposedly goes back to the artists. (Whether it actually does get back to the artists is debatable.) The levies on music players were recently ruled invalid, a ruling which was upheld by the Supreme Court last month.

http://www.apple.com/ca/ipodlevies/

It will be nice to get my $25 back. And besides, I already paid plenty of levies on my CD-Rs, which means I've already purchased the right to download as much music as I want.

08:52 pm - Stephen Harper Continues To Make A Mockery of Himself (Canadian Politics)
Stephen Harper says any gay marriage law will be stamped with illegitimacy because it will owe its passage to Quebec separatists.

Same-sex marriage legislation, which is expected to become law later this week with the votes of the Bloc Quebecois, would have been thwarted if only federalists MPs were casting ballots, the Conservative leader said Monday.

So first he complains that the passing of the budget was undemocratic and then the claims that Québecers votes for separatist MPs are less valid than votes for Federalist MPs. He's saying he believes one vote is worth less than another. Yeah, he only supports democracy when it suits his purpose. And only a few days ago he was accusing the Liberals of having no principles.

Back around the last election we were quite worried that too many people would vote for this guy. Fortunately, it seems that we don't have to worry about bringing him down. He's doing a good job of that by himself.

Dear Stephen, what exactly do you stand for? Oh, that's right. Your conceited self. Once again, please do yourself a favour and sit down and shut up before you hurt yourself. Again.

I could say more, but Jack Layton's comments really put the puck in the net.

03:44 pm - Stephen Harper should be comedian of the year (Canadian Politics)
Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, criticised the minority Liberal Party government for making a deal with the separatist Bloc Québecois to pass the latest budget, thus preventing an election and allowing for Canada's Gay Rights bill C-38 to come up to bat.

The budget, "Bill C-48, which includes more money for public transit, is a package of concessions NDP leader Jack Layton wrung out of the Liberal government last month in return for NDP support."

Harper:

"I don't think anybody in Canada voted for a Liberal-NDP-Bloc coalition, but that's what we've got," Mr. Harper said. "We've become the only party actually opposing the government, and we'll continue to oppose it and I've made it clear, we're prepared to have an election at anytime," he added.

Excuse me, but when do all parties have mutually exclusive agendas? The NDP and Bloc both have socialist priorities and agree on most everything except the Québec Soverignty issue. If the parties agree on something, they vote together. Opposing something that matches your agenda just because you are the opposition is stupid, hurtful and wasteful.

Harper is just annoyed because he's nearly irrelevant and doesn't have enough Parliamentary seats to make a difference. And how he's just jumping up and down and making noise in fustration.

Harper:

It was probably the most undemocratic display we have ever had in the Canadian Parliament," Mr. Harper said. "The three parties got together and decided to ram a budget bill through without even allowing the other party, the Official Opposition, even speak to it.

Since when is voting on something undemocratic? Harper is pissed because his party got caught sleeping. When it was time to vote on the Bill, he didn't even have all his representatives in Parliament. Poo on you Harper. Stop making noise because you're angry that you don't matter.

Mr. Harper charged that the Liberals, in allying themselves with the Bloc, have shown their true colours. "It's a corrupt government. It's got no principles," he said. "They'll do anything or anybody at any time. And the public should know that."

The NDP and Bloc have quite the opposite priorities that Harper does, and again he is annoyed that they matter more than he does, and that the Liberals wouldn't take his compromise of cancelling the Gay Rights bill. Speaking of corrupt, wasn't it Harper's party who used altered evidence to try to prove that there was a funding scandal with a previous Liberal government? Speaking of no principles, isn't it Harper who is so selfish that he would rather force an election to satisfy his personal greed for power and need for attention instead of doing what's right for the country?

The budget is GOOD. Post secondary education and transit are starving. Jack Layton played his cards right and is now reaping the rewards.

"What's the point of electing an opposition party that spends its time supporting the government?"

Excuse me but this it is not the 1800s anymore. Responsible Government means that you vote for whether the Bill is good for the country or not, as opposed to voting against the other guys regardless of the Bill's content.

Stephen Harper: Please just sit down and shut up. You are irrelevant and only making a fool of yourself.
