08:44 pm - Costco AmEx
I've had my CostCo AmEx for about a week now and this must be the most shiny and pretty piece of plastic I've ever laid eyes on.

This is probably just one of their ploys to make you want to use the card and keep you thinking about it. I just like looking at it because of the hologram magstripe. But damn, I bet there are people out there who just come up with excuses to use it so they can show it off.

10:18 pm - Cost of Living
Why in the world is cheese so expensive?

I'm thinking of taking a drive into Rochester to pick up massive bulk quantities of all kinds of regular household stuff and groceries. With the tanking USD, the exchange rate is too damn juicy.

If I was looking for an appliance like a high end stove or something, I could save hundreds of dollars. If I was looking for a car, I could save thousands or even tens of thousands depending on the model.

Getting a big five-bedroom mansion around the Rochester area costs less than one third the price of my 700 sq ft condo.

If only the gas wasn't over a dollar a litre...

11:22 pm - Car Pickup
So I go to the dealership today to pick up my Mazda6, and it turns out the bank made an error in the draft and did not put the proper stamps on it.

STAB

Tomorrow I will visit the bank again to give the manager a piece of my mind.

08:16 pm - Car Financing: Most Insane Deal I've Seen
OK, so this is a $17.5K 2007 Ford Fusion. Off-lease. Almost new. Very low mileage.

Finance with $2000 down and $72/month for 320 months. WHO THE HELL WOULD WANT TO FINANCE A CAR FOR 26 YEARS?!

How in the world have I only racked up $186 on my MasterCard this month?!

Normally I am at around $350-400 in the middle of the month.

09:01 pm - "High Limit Card" - Is This For Real?!
http://www.highlimitcard.com/

The way I read their site, you are only allowed to use your "High Limit Card" for purchasing items from their own catalogue! Also, you cannot see their catalogue prices unless you are already a member! (Smells like DirectBuy.)

Is this even a credit card at all? You have to give chequing account information during the signup!

"Thank you for continuing with your HLC account activation process. Highlimit Credit, Inc. (HLC) will electronically debit your checking account, pursuant to the account and routing information that you will provide us below, for a one-time $ 178.95 Activation and Processing Fee, which includes a $100 Refundable Activation Fee (refundable for 30 days after account activation). Remember, the one-time fee will appear as a debit on your banking statement from Highlimit Credit, Inc. and it entitles you to receive your benefits, including your $10,000.00 HLC Platinum-Elite Creditline.

Their cardholder agreement (which is carefully hiden) is here:
https://www.highlimitcard.com/content/view/14/28/

"ALL PURCHASES WITH YOUR MERCHANTCARD ARE SUBJECT TO 30% DOWN PAYMENTS PLUS SHIPPING AND HANDLING."

"YOUR MEMBERCARD ANNUAL FEE IS $198 FOR THE FIRST YEAR AND IS CHARGED TO YOUR HLC CREDITLINE, WHEN YOU PAY YOUR ACTIVATION FEE. THE ANNUAL FEE IS REDUCED TO $99 ANNUALLY FOR EACH YEAR THEREAFTER."

Shocking.

02:09 pm - Costco
I wonder how long it will take Costco to catch onto my grand scheme: I just keep buying their cash cards online so I get the points on my MasterCard, so essentially I am using MC in their stores that only take cash, Debit and AmEx. And they're paying postage to mail me the cash cards so I can do it.

And yes, the points on my MC are beneficial. I've just passed $600 in benefits since 2002.

10:04 pm - OCD FTW!
I may have finally found a constructive way to channel my obsessive need to collect, categorize and organize things, and it doesn't involve massive databases of forum postings!

I'm going to put together the most detailed and elaborate expense and receipt-tracking system ever conceived. This will be very good for budgeting, financial planning and personal money-management.

Yes, my 2007 Tax Return will be the most ass-kicking tax return ever!

11:11 pm - My Method For Scouting Gas Prices
1. Grab Binoculars
2. Go Out On Balcony
3. Use Binoculars to Look For Gas Prices
4. Drive Out To Gas Station If Gas Is Cheap

To me this makes sense because you don't waste time and gas going out and looking for gas. It's quick and efficient.

Yet people think I have too much time on my hands...

Weird.

10:16 pm - Moving Expenses
I finally got off my butt and did the math and paperwork to find all of my moving expenses. Legal fees, levies, utility costs, everything. That's a shitload of fees.

The amount I have to pay on my tax return is looking a lot nicer now. :)

07:46 pm - About Damn Time... (Finances)
Finally got my RRSP (retirement savings tax shelter) set up today, in time for 2006 taxes. This is the first year where I actually have enough income and a lack of student expenses to justify putting the money away.

Turns out that they didn't even need to see my Social Insurance Number card, which is good because I lost it 2 years ago during a move to a new home. I applied for a replacement, but it has not arrived yet.

08:10 pm - Property Taxes
I bought my place in 2006, but they decided not to bill me for 2006 taxes until 2007.

So now I have to pay 2006 and 2007 taxes in 2007.

Only solace is that it appears I can still deduct the 2006 taxes on my 2006 tax return.

Bastards.

06:21 pm - Notebook Deal
I have the opportunity to purchase a brand new top-end IBM (Lenovo) T60 notebook for $900 off the list price in a completely legal and legitimate way.

Damn it. The fact is that I don't really "need" a notebook right now. And I want to save my money for a vacation this year.

11:32 am - Organisation
I spent a few hours last night and another hour this morning scanning all my old credit card and utility bills back to the beginning of 2006. It was honestly less work than I thought it would be, mainly thanks to the ADF (auto document feeder) on my printer.

This info will probably come in handy with all the taxes stuff I am doing lately.

I am planning to scan all my other bills as they come on. In general, it will be really good to have this stuff because I won't have to root through piles of paper records to find what I am looking for.

09:51 pm - To The Lady Who Was In Front Of Me In Line To Use The ATM...
You should not be using ATMs from a bank other than your own when your account balance is already at over $13,500 in the red. That extra $1.50 fee is not what you need right now!

Also, don't leave that transaction slip sitting in the machine. It contains your private data on it.
