10:44 pm - You Know You're Getting Old When...
You have to enable the "Recycle Bin" on your computer instead of having deleted files actually getting deleted as the default action.

06:11 pm - How Time Flies
Today is the three-year anniversary of the day I convocated from university.

I only noticed it because I was looking at my old LJ posts and found the two-year anniversary posts.

I don't miss school.

Play your hand close to your chest keep your mouth shut as much as possible. Your competitors will generally be their own worst enemy by sowing their own destruction.

08:58 pm - Think Slow
This is my new groove. Think slow. Everyone and everything is always pushing you for more and faster, but really, if you slow down and think then you are less likely to make a mistake and more likely to make cogent decisions.

Think. Slow.

Today is the two-year anniversary of the day I convocated from university.

I only noticed it because I finally brought my diplomas over from my parents' place to my place and just noticed the date when I was looking at them.

I don't miss school.

A simple but very moving CG video.

"A machine with a doll face mimics images on television screen in search of a satisfactory visage."

Very touching and though-provoking on a number of levels.

10:59 pm - Changes
A confluence of things in my life have resulted in me making changes, some of which are long overdue:

1. Career swap. I don't want to go into the details of how I feel about what's going on at work, but I believe it is in my best interest to make a lateral career move to a different company. One day on Monster and I've already gotten 2 e-mails and 13 views of my resume. One thing that will break my heart is leaving all the great people that I work with and all the friends that I made.

2. I'm stepping down from moderating on AoD. I simply don't have the time, money or interest in the scene anymore to be effective there. The boards don't hold my attention as they did in the "Golden Age" of 2004.

3. One thing I've identified is that I need more "right-brain activities," particularly in the context of social interaction with people from outside my normal business / school friends circles. So I'm looking into taking some sort of beginner's art class. They have a cool looking drawing class at the local arts centre. Actually I tried to fax in my application form already but their fax machine did not pick up.

10:14 pm - Real Budgeting
Three months in a row now my MasterCard bill has been within-budget and well under control.

And this is with some reasonable amount of discretionary non-essential expenditures. I'm also on-target for the same for this month even though I'm buying Christmas gifts.

I am proud.

10:10 pm - Going To The Mall Makes Me Feel Like Such A Hick...
Seriously. I'm just a small-town guy who grew up in a farming township where the neighbours had cows in their field. It feels weird to see a small group of teenage girls who probably sport more bling amongst them than the population of my entire high school in my day. Makes me feel like an out-of-touch old man.

05:14 pm - How Schools Used To Be
Whenver I visit my former high school, it's always somewhat nostalgic. I see my photo there on the grad photos wall. Now they've got security cameras in the halls and big angry signs gracing the cafeteria walls blaring out the rules in black and white.

We've never had anything as bad as those high school shootings that keep monopolizing the headlines, though I do recall a fake bomb threat, a child-porn collecting teacher and at least one rape in the girls' washroom that the administration suppressed.

Things are changing. Sometimes I look back and shock myself by remembering things that went on back in more innocent days.

Back in grade 4, in the days before Hallowe'en, the teacher announced that we would be carving pumpkins as part of our art class. She instructed us to bring knives to school for pumpkin-carving. I brought my big Swiss Army knife and definitely was the best equipped in the class. The teacher provided some knives for other students who didn't bring anything. The pumpkin carving was great fun and nobody was hurt, of course.

And even further back in grade 2 or 3, I brought in said Swiss Army knife for show and tell. The teacher didn't appreciate that, though at the time I had no idea why. He insisted that I leave the knife with him for the day and then get it at the end of class to take it home again. That sort of stunt would get a kid suspended / arrested these days.

And now we have students getting suspended because the guy's mom put a knife in his lunch bag so he could cut his orange.

The levels of paranoia being promoted these days are just shocking. I think it's a combination of overly alarmist media coverage, school boards that are terrified of liability lawsuits, lawsuit culture in general, violence portrayed in the media, and overzealous parents. It's just making our society drown in a sickening soup of political correctness and litigiousness that doesn't allow children to have childhoods anymore. Sickening. Children are not pint-sized adults who can be put into an insulated, isolated, legally-secure pen called a school and then expected to grow into mature individuals who understand individual responsibility for their actions.

I will never have children before a very serious look into whether or not they could be homeschooled.
